Gamified Fitness App for Children
Timspark developed a gamified fitness app for children that connects guided workouts and camera-based exercise tracking with progress records, points, and badges. Parents manage child accounts, permissions, and subscriptions, while invited coaches receive limited progress reports.
The fitness app development project included a React Native mobile app and a Python backend, with KinesteX integration for workout tracking and Adapty for subscriptions. The client needed an engaging training experience for children alongside clear oversight for parents.

Highlights
- React Native fitness app connecting children, parents and invited coaches.
- Camera-based workout tracking through KinesteX integration.
- Workout history, progress indicators, points and collectible badges.
- Parent-managed accounts, permissions and subscriptions.
Challenge
The client needed a fitness app that encouraged children to exercise regularly while giving parents control over accounts and visibility into progress.
-
- children needed straightforward training flows and engaging rewards;
- parents needed account and subscription management;
- coaches required limited access to reports.
The engineering challenge was to connect these experiences with reliable workout records. Workout completion and exercise metrics could arrive at different times, making the timing of accuracy-based rewards important. Badge requirements also needed to account for incomplete activities and repeated events to prevent incorrect or duplicate awards.

Solution & functionality
Timspark built the mobile application using React Native, Expo, and TypeScript, supported by a Python backend built with FastAPI. The application connects assigned workouts and additional training activities with progress records, rewards, and parent-facing controls.
Separate onboarding flows accommodate children, parents, and coaches. Account management and permissions are managed by parents, while children access their workouts and achievements.
Assigned workouts and additional activities give children a clear path through their training.
KinesteX enables camera-based exercise tracking and records workout metrics, including accuracy.
Progress indicators and collectible rewards make completed activity visible.
Parents manage child accounts, permissions, and subscriptions and receive progress updates.
The team integrated KinesteX for guided workouts and camera-based exercise tracking. The app records exercise results, including accuracy, alongside workout activity.
KinesteX provides the tracking functionality. Timspark’s work connected the SDK with the application’s training and progress workflows.
Workout history, points, and a badge collection give children visible feedback on their activity. Progress screens bring these records together so users can review completed training and earned rewards.
The team also documented expanded badge requirements and QA scenarios covering milestones, activity over time, delayed accuracy data, and duplicate-award protection. These specifications provide a basis for extending and validating the reward system.
Delivery model
Timspark’s scope covered mobile and backend development, third-party integrations, and the workflows connecting training activity with progress records and rewards.
The project followed Scrum practices with two-week sprints. Day-to-day communication took place primarily through Slack and project management channels, with close collaboration across sprint planning, backlog refinement, code reviews and regular status updates.
Stakeholder communication was coordinated by project management representatives, enabling the integrated teams to align on technical dependencies, evolving requirements and delivery priorities throughout the project.

Results and business value
The delivered application brings guided training, recorded progress, and rewards into one product, with parent controls and limited reporting access for invited coaches. It gives the client a foundation for a subscription-based children’s fitness offering.
The project also produced requirements and QA scenarios for expanding the badge system, including cases where exercise metrics arrive after workout completion.
